Children's Work

Last term we were talking about the values of motivation and resilience. This video show the children's ideas about these values.
The end of the video shows some co-operative listening work that we tried. The children had to sit back to back with copies of the same picture and the same set of colours. They took turns to tell each other how to colour in the sheets. You can see what a great job they did.

Drip drop went the rain.
I got wet.
Very wet.
The rain got my home wet but luckily we lit the fire and it got warm inside but not outside.
Outside it was cold and I had to wear my jacket and my school jacket and my umbrella.
On the roof of my umbrella, it made the sound . . .
drip drop.

Stories

I was camping. My sister and cousin went to the swing. My cousin saw the fire.
She said,
“Let’s run.”
My sister said, “Can I have one more go?”
My sister got on the swing. She saw the fire. She got off.
Myiah and my cousin came running back screaming

I said, “Yes.”

October 2013

Read some of our holiday stories.
We tried to think about a moment in time in the holidays when we felt a strong emotion and then to write about it in such a way that we showed rather than told our feelings.

See what you think.

“Are we nearly there yet?” we all asked.
“No,” said Mum.
“Oh!” we yelled.
A while later we got to our destination, Staglands.

We all hopped out of the car on to the rocky shingle and hurried to the wooden counter. When we got to the front of the queue the lady at the desk asked us if we would like to toast marshmallows on the campfire next to the barn yard.
“Yes please,” we chorused.

We each grabbed a bag of marshmallows and a stick and ran to the barn. When all of us got to the barn we toasted our marshmallows. When Millie and I had toasted ours we got tons of ash in our eyes. After lots of coughing and spluttering our marshmallows were cooked. After we ate some of the creamy treats mum told us to leave the rest for later.

We moved on to the duck and swan pond. When we got to the pond, something caught our eye. It was a massive, white swan and do you know what he was doing? He was chasing a poor mother duck that was trying to look after her 12 baby ducklings. The swan chased her all around the pond. Once he even pulled out one of her tail feathers.

The duck quacked and the swan hissed and the ducklings cheeped. They swam around the pond madly trying to find somewhere to hide. I felt like I could just kick that swan. The duck and ducklings swam and swam until they found a nice sheltered place where the swan couldn’t find them. When the last, littlest, duck got in the clump of bushes and they were all snuggled up, we went to toast our last marshmallows.

My eyes lit up as I saw the movie screen. It brightened up like a star as the movie started. The lights went out. My eyes leapt from my sockets and in to the movie.

I went to Hanmer Springs with my aunty and mum, dad and brother. We had a great time, a fantastic time. Twice my brother came down the hydroslide with me. It felt like I was in a rocket bursting into the galaxy.

I went on a really long trip to Twizel. My uncle and I found a BMX track. The jumps were enormous like boulders and first I went down a humungous hill. When I went down it was super fast like Usain Bolt. When I went up the jump I went flying like a bird. I landed on my face. Ow!!

In the holidays I invited Lana and mum and dad to Granny Mac is Back on an exciting Saturday night. It was about penguins at Caroline Bay, Granny Mac and dogs and cats. It was amazing. Then I started to finish the lights turned on and we went out and met the characters and got a free ice cream.

Lucy Hinde                            October 2013

In the holidays, Lucy and I went to Granny Mac is back with Lucy and Mum and Dad. It was great. After the show we got to meet the people who were in the show. Then we got to go backstage and go on the train. It was fun.
After that Lucy stayed the night at my house. In the morning we got up, got dressed and we decided that we’d go on the trampoline. Then after that we filled some water balloon up and we threw them on the ground. The water balloons flew like a shooting rocket. Then we put make-up on and we danced until we got puffed like a puffin bird. I felt really happy

My eyes lit up. My breath was heavy. I jumped as my movie started.
In the movie, I walked up the stairs as the man slowly shifted.
“Excuse me, sir.” I said.
Suddenly the man turned around to reveal a bloody face.
I laughed as I watched myself as I screamed and ran down the stairs.
I felt very happy and proud.
The end . . . or is it?

My sister went to the same place over and over again. Then I got confused. I got a free meal at Chipmunks because they mixed up my meal. Then I got more confused my nana went then she came back. Well. When my mum said Nana was just coming up but granddad came up too so I got confused again.

The waves splashed on the dashing rocks.
I saw a big fish flopping in to a rock pool that was only big enough for it to swim around and around in it.

The Longest Bike Ride Ever

I puffed and panted, the port zooming past, the fishy smell in my nostrils. My heavy legs were going to die with the blazing sun. We had been biking for two and a half hours, training for the Timaru Triathlon. Suddenly, I fell off my bike; my leg started bleeding and that was the end of training for that day.

Amalia  Cabrera-Martin                  October 2013

We had to get back to Timaru because Riley had an appointment for his arm but the tyres went down. We were coming back home from Middlemarch and then we went around the corner and we went on a lean. There were stones flicking up on the windows. Then we tipped back onto our wheels and we got back to Middlemarch. Now Riley’s appointment is tomorrow after school.

                                  I was happy.
I was surprised.
It was cool.
It was exciting.
It was a long day making my boat.

My mouth was pen. A big smile lit up on my face.
“That doll looks so cute and extremely little.”
My cheeks turned red when I took the doll home.
“Now what can I call her?’ I mused as I walked on to our soft, lovely floor. A name dropped into my head as I took the doll out of a cardboard box that the little doll was in. The name I was thinking about was Sophia Lily Barge.
That name will suit the baby perfectly.
So that’s what the baby’s name turned out to be!!
We knew that the doll was a girl because of its clothes.
I am so happy that I am a mum and my sister is happy that she is an Aunty.
I love Sophia.

At one o’clock a Westpac helicopter was taking off. The engineers checked it two times. The helicopter was reaching 5,000 feet and the altitude lever was stuck. The engine was stuffed. Radio control, ask for emergency landing. Then the propellers stopped and we hit the power pole. Thud!

 Spring

The sun shines like a diamond. It gets very windy. I think spring is the best season. There are lots of sunny days. I also think that spring is great because you can go outside and read a book!

Lucius Raine  September 2013

What is Spring?

Spring is warm.
The flowers are sprouting.
The birds are chirping.
Leaves are green and the sky is blue.
The sun is shining bright.
Baby lambs are crying to their mothers.

Perfect weather
Rushing rivers
Ice melting
New flowers sprouting
Gleaming sun

We are working on poetic language at the moment and trying to  make our writing more interesting by adding details, in this case sounds to make the setting more alive.
Here are some of our ideas.

Someone was singing while a train was going rattly-clattly across the shining tracks.  Lucy and Annabel

People laughing like hyenas while we worked as hard as honeybees making honey and feeding the hive.

And something different from Amalia

There was also a very, very big tree. I climbed up it. The branches were as fat and strong as giant’s fingers. I climbed up so high I couldn’t climb any more. I felt like I was floating away on a cloud. From the cloud I could see the playground.

Read the start of Lucius' story here. Isn't it amazing? He told us about using a thesaurus to find interesting words to include in this work.

Beware of the Full Moon

Chapter One

Our story begins.

Horror!
They shuffled long the alleyway, stopping at the edge of the dark. They stared at the man standing under the beam of light, then they emerged out of the dark. Their slow but loud breath echoing in a gloomy way down the deep, dark, damp damaged and very stinky alleyway.
“Moan!” moaned the creatures. The man froze then turned. The man was para;ysed.
“Ahhhh! It’s a . . .” CRUNCH! And with that the creatures bit his head and started biting it more! Seven minutes later, after finally biting through the skull, one of them got the brain.
“Brain! Brain! Brain! Brain! Brain! Brain!” shouted the creature happily but still gloomily. Then they licked all picked it up and shuffled back down the alleyway.

Chapter Two

Humans in Habitat

These creatures thought that now the man was dead the humans would leave their cosy and relaxing home (to them) alone. But what they didn’t know was that there were at least another thousand humans. 12 miles from the cemetery was a town. A very peaceful town called Happyville. The citizens of happyville were obviously happy, except one. A young boy called Bruce. He was an orphan at only the age of 7. Bruce’s parents had died in a car crash in U.S.A. Bruce had no siblings but he did have friends. Three boys, two girls and a talking dog called Sam. The funny thing about Bruce was that he could see and talk to the dead.

Scooter Fall!

On Tuesday I was going home with Foster.
I was going with Foster and George because George lives on the same street as Foster. I had brought my scooter that day because of scooter safety.
When I was going down the hill to the back exit, I was going really fast and then I put my foot down and I fell off my scooter!
“Ahhhhh!!!!!”
There was blood from my forehead down to my chin!

Rocky Shore

Gabbu took me to the noisy rocky shore. We swished the water about to make smooth waving seaweed into rapid and vicious seaweed so all the animals that lived there came out. Gabbu said, "You are awesome at finding sea anemones."

I stood on the rock. I didn't know this but I learnt, that if you sing, seals will come. Gabbu took me home.

Lucy  March 2013

I was excited because we were going camping in Hanmer Springs. On the way there, we stopped at a paddling pool and we had a paddle,
We finally go there. W put up the tent. Then me, Rafi, and Carmina went to the playground. There was this fireman’s pole. It wasn’t a normal fireman’s pole. It had tyres up it to climb up it. I tried it but I couldn’t do it. I knew I would be able to do it before we left. There were lots of other cool things.

The next day we went to the Lolly Pot. It was a sweet shop. I got some jelly beans. Rafi got Nerds and Carmina got eatable letters. That night we went our for dinner.

In the morning we went to the swimming pool. There was a hydroslide called the Super Pol. You had to walk up the steps to get to a place with a tiny pool with the hydroslide going out of it. Then you had to sit in a tube and you were off!! It was as fast as lightning.
We went in hot pools and cold pools. They were all awesome.

The next day, I could do the fireman’s pole. That day we drove home.
